America's First Amendment - The Right to Freedom of [Hate] Speech
What the Yanks thinks it gives them; the right to say absolutely anything to anyone without consequence.
What it actually gives them is protection from Congress making a law to abridge freedom of speech.
So constitutional scholars like this guy, driving in the Columbus Ohio 4th July parade earlier this week...
... think this is perfectly ok.
The DISorganiser of the Columbus Ohio "Doo Dah" Parade - seriously, that's it's name, defends the entry as "Satire". Several of the reader comments in the local newspaper also refer to it as "Satire" and tell the thin-skinned not to attend if easily offended.
“It’s freedom of speech. If it stirred up reaction, I guess he had a good political message,” said Deb Roberts, Miz Doo Dah.
Firstly, this word "satire" . Listen you dolts, it would only be satirical if the driver were mocking other motorists and their bigoted, "won't share the road" mentality. Which I think we can safely establish that "BIK H8R" is not doing.
But if it helps you, we can work through this together; let's replace the cyclist with a black teenager in a hoodie; is that still "satire" ? What about someone wearing a Star of David ?
Am I being satirical yet ? So there'll be no problem with acceptance when I turn up to drive in next year's parade looking like I just ran over a black Jewish teenage in a wheelchair; especially as no-one bothers to record entrants names or licence plates.
Yep, you can just turn up with your First Amendment protected right to incite murder and wave at the crowd. This absolute waste of human skin covered his real plates with duct tape, so obviously wasn't completely oblivious to just how offensive his message was.
One of my first thoughts was wondering what happens at the intersection of America's First and Second Amendments ? i.e their insane right to bare arms ?
And sure enough, one of the reader comments is from a cyclist who has a concealed/carry permit and mounts their handgun on the top tube of their bike. Their message ...
Seriously, go home America, you're drunk.
My second thoughts were of 3 weeks ago; these 5 people who went out for a ride and were killed, Debra Ann Bradley, 53; Melissa Ann Fevig-Hughes, 42; Tony Nelson, 73; Larry Paulik, 74; and Suzanne Joan Sippel, 56.
Four other people on bikes in the same group were seriously injured.
My third thoughts; the deliberate hit-and-run thrill-kill of a cyclist in NYC this week.
Matthew Von Ohlen, 35, was coming back from his night shift around 2:20am Saturday when a driver slowed down, exchanged words with von Ohlen, and then veered into the bike lane behind him. The driver then deliberately hit von Ohlen’s rear tire and as Matthew fell off his bike, the driver slammed into him again, running over him and dragging him about twenty to thirty feet. The driver then sped off, and has not yet been found. Local security cameras caught it all; and it is unbelievable and distressing viewing.
The following morning the NYPD were out in force, ticketing cyclists on the same stretch of road.
So satire eh ? We laughing yet ?
