Scared of traffic ? No bike infrastructure ? Too Far ? Helmet hair ?

Fuck it, ride anyway

Can you backpedal on a Boris bike?

Hah, a combined Brexit/bike joke.  Tailor made !

Hasn’t Boris’s profile changed drastically over the past week ? [Guffaw] Ewan McGregor seems pretty unimpressed.

While Boris may not have been everyone’s pick for Mayor of London (I believe he relied on preferences to win) he was unarguably a high profile mayor who championed some contentious policies for one of the world’s oldest established cities facing the most modern of issues; car and truck congestion and deadly pollution.

Rather unfairly the ubiquitous Boris Bike is probably the best known symbol (for a non-Londoner) of this man’s influence. His predecessor Ken Livingston actually did most of the work; Boris was only in office for two months prior to the bikes being launched.  But “Ken bike” ? Yeah, nah.

The record for Boris Bike hires in a single day is 73,000; which doesn’t count cyclists with their own bikes obviously – that’s a decent amount of people moved off the roads and trains and onto alternative transport. According to published statistics it’s the equal of one of London's inner city train lines every day. That is significant.

In 2008 Ken Livingston also announced twelve new bicycle routes, dubbed Cycle Superhighways, which were to create continuous routes into central London. At the moment approximately 50% of these routes have been opened; last month another section opened, and here’s a 30 second video of the volumes of people using the thing on only the third day. This is only one traffic light change too remember...

There are people cycling in London, ordinary people in their everyday clothes, riding their bikes in central London because they now feel safe to do so.

FFS, how many times do we have to say this to our politicians, to all politicians for that matter; build it, and we will be there. With bells on; or it’s a $106 fine.

What is the easiest way to offset the rampant pollution you’re doing nothing practical to contain with endless political manoeuvrings ?

HINT: replace as many cars with bikes as possible. Just give us a protected/separated lane.

How do you achieve the carbon reductions you’ve so begrudgingly agreed to at various Global Climate Summits? Give people the safe environment to ride our bikes to work, to school, to the shops, and need I say it again; we’ll do all the hard work.

Every single one of them is one less car. Except maybe whoever's riding the pink bike.

Given enough time maybe you'll all forgive/forget the Brexit and this will be Boris's legacy ...
