Spokes(Wo)Man

Scared of traffic ? No bike infrastructure ? Too Far ? Helmet hair ?

Fuck it, ride anyway

Happy Birthday to ME

Well, not to me per se. But it is the first birthday of Spokes(wo)man Global Communications Mega-Network, and pretty much also of this blog. So there's that. Huzzah!

So on this day one year ago, I couldn't sleep for nervousness before my first bike ride into work; these days I snooze right up until the last minute and fang it in as fast as poss, while whistling a little ditty. Who amongst us hasn't made a few swoopy bike-dance moves when no-one's looking

Shake it like a Polaroid picture ladies !

Last year I was terrified of traffic; this year, contemptuous, scathing, wary, but not terrified.

Last year I wore the most hideous ensemble, this year I like to think of myself as more "tastefully attired".

Who's that in the foreground with her back to the camera ? C'est moi !  Bundled up like an Eskimo, but present and probably totally wired on adrenalin. Kuringai Council using a pic of my backside from 2015 to promote the 2016 Ride2Work day. This year I was interviewed and had my pictures taken at several free breakfasts along the route. In all of them i am sans make-up, a bit pink-cheeked from the ride, messy wisps of hair escaping from my helmet, but the smile can be seen from outer-space. Progress indeed ...

Also over the past 12 months, I lost about 7 kg, put some back on, felt healthier and happier, I started this blog, joined Twitter (@Spokes_wo_man has a real Love/Hate thing going on there I can tell you), started going to transport and city-planning events, and developed a real interest in urban planning and liveable city design. The places a late-onset hobby will take you eh ?

It's been a great year.

So.

Much.

Fun.

With a special thank you to Sprocketman for his continued support and purchasing of bike things to cheer me up, and to my lovely friend Clayton, who rode home with me as a surprise on this day last year; let's do it again sometime : )
